Canary Wharf Estate Agents and the UK's Highest Homes

The UK’s tallest residential building looks set to be constructed on the doorstep of Canary Wharf estate agents after London Mayor Boris Johnson did not oppose the plans for South Quay.

The Isle of Dogs’ South Quay Plaza will reach 722ft (220m) at its highest and have 888 residential units – including 188 affordable homes – and span 68 floors. According to Canary Wharf estate agents, this is a reduced number compared to original plans. Construction on what looks set to become an iconic building in the Canary Wharf ward is scheduled to start in 2016.

Tower Hamlets Council originally approved the plans last November, and now the building work can start after the mayor decided not to call the plans in and effectively gave the green light for the project.

The major building initiative, on a site at Marsh Wall close to Canary Wharf, will also include the construction of a smaller tower with only 36 storeys. Three commercial buildings that currently sit on the site will be demolished to make room for the ambitious project that looks set to take its place in the record books.

Berkeley Homes submitted an original plan for a 73-storey residential skyscraper, but this number has now been reduced by five storeys. Another change to the original application for planning is that there will now be an affordable crèche housed in the smaller of the two towers, and plans for a new north-to-south route for pedestrians across the west side of the site have also been added.

The construction of South Quay Plaza, which looks set to begin in January, should take five years to complete, and the news of its green light has been met with approval from Tower Hamlets Council. The authority released a statement welcoming the news and saying that it will provide new homes for the borough, including the 188 which will be classed as affordable. It added that the creation of the Plaza would form a major part of the council’s plans to rejuvenate the South Quay district and transform it into a thriving and vibrant dockside neighbourhood.
